Yard work is one of the “joys” of life. Even if your HOA or landlord maintains your main yard, you probably still often find yourself pulling weeds or doing some other minor maintenance.

Some people are avid gardeners, happily spending hours outside every week tending flowers or vegetable gardens.

I’m in the middle of a multi-year yard project. I lost most of the trees in my backyard during Hurricane Helene and am working on preparing the area to become a future woodland garden area. This year’s goal is simple: reduce the weeds and remove the vines.

Before planting trees, flowers, or vegetables, it’s important to do this preparatory work: pulling or removing weeds (watch out for poison ivy!), clearing out rocks, possibly removing stumps or other debris. Depending on the condition of the land, it can take a months or even years to get the area ready for healthy new growth.

Even in established gardens, we spend time pulling weeds, pruning, watering, and fertilizing before we can really sit back and enjoy the flowers or taste the fresh, home-grown produce.

Spiritual transformation works in much the same way. God often works beneath the surface before visible change appears.

Rooted in the Word

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
…but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all he does, he prospers.

-Psalm 1:1-3

As we daily meditate on God’s Word, He develops our roots in Himself. He is like the streams of water that sustain life and growth. (John 4:14)

Roots naturally grow toward moisture. Even in dry climates, trees survive because their roots reach hidden sources of water. Likewise, God places people, Scripture, and circumstances in our lives to draw our spiritual roots deeper into Him.

When trials or struggles come, we don’t have to wither or give up on our faith. Our stability doesn’t come from favorable circumstances but from our security and identity being firmly rooted in Christ.

Pruned by the Father

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away,
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes,
that it may bear more fruit.
Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
Abide in me, and I in you.
As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
I am the vine; you are the branches.
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit,
for apart from me you can do nothing.”

-John 15:1-5

Experienced gardeners know when to prune and exactly where to make each cut so the plant becomes healthier and more productive.

God is the Master Gardener. He is lovingly at work in our lives, trimming the habits, attitudes, and distractions that drain our spiritual strength without producing lasting fruit. His pruning may be uncomfortable, but it is always purposeful. Every cut He makes prepares us for greater growth.

Yielding Fruit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

-Galatians 5:22-23

The fruit God produces in us isn’t a checklist of behaviors to adopt or avoid. It is the natural result of remaining connected to Christ.

Healthy fruit always begins with healthy roots.

As we invest in prayer, spend time in God’s Word, and deepen our relationship with Him, the Holy Spirit gradually shapes our character. Love becomes more natural. Patience grows. Joy remains even during difficult seasons.

Just as a gardener cannot force fruit to appear overnight, we cannot manufacture spiritual maturity through sheer effort. When we remain rooted in Christ, allow the Father to prune us, and trust His work beneath the surface, spiritual fruit grows in His perfect timing.
